TON Community Votes to Rename Toncoin as “Gram”
The community behind Toncoin has overwhelmingly approved a proposal backed by Telegram to rename the network’s native cryptocurrency. Following the successful governance vote, the token currently known as Toncoin (TON) will officially be rebranded as Gram (GRAM). The proposal, which was open for voting between June 1 and June 8, 2026, received strong support from network participants. According to the final results, 81.22% of voters approved the change, while approximately 18.33% voted against it. A small percentage of participants abstained. More than 2.68 million TON worth of voting power supported the proposal, compared to roughly 604,880 TON opposing it, highlighting broad community backing for one of the most significant branding changes in the network's history.
Ticker Symbol Will Change From TON to GRAM
As part of the approved proposal, the token's ticker symbol will change from TON to GRAM. However, the change is largely cosmetic and branding-related. The proposal explicitly states that the underlying blockchain infrastructure will remain exactly the same. Key points include: The blockchain will continue operating normally. No token migration will occur. No token swap will be required. No bridging process will be necessary. Smart contracts will remain unchanged. Wallet addresses will stay identical. User balances will not be affected. For example, if a user currently holds 10 TON, their wallet balance will simply display 10 GRAM after the transition. This approach is designed to ensure a seamless experience for users while avoiding the complications often associated with token migrations and blockchain upgrades.
The Open Network Will Keep Its Existing Name
One of the most important clarifications in the proposal is that the blockchain itself is not being renamed. The Open Network will continue to operate under its existing identity, and the network will still be commonly referred to as TON or The Open Network. Only the native asset is changing its branding. This distinction is important because many blockchain projects use the same name for both the network and the token. In this case, TON will continue to represent the blockchain ecosystem, while GRAM will become the name of the native cryptocurrency used across the network.
Telegram's Growing Influence Played a Major Role
The proposal was introduced under the banner of the "Make TON Great Again" (MTONGA) initiative and emphasized Telegram's increasingly important role within the ecosystem. Over the past several years, Telegram has become deeply integrated with The Open Network, supporting applications, payments, mini-apps, and blockchain-based services for its massive global user base. According to the proposal, Telegram has also emerged as one of the network's largest validators, strengthening its influence over ecosystem development. Supporters argue that restoring the Gram branding better aligns the project with its original vision while reflecting Telegram's growing involvement in the network's future expansion.
Why the Name "Gram" Matters
For longtime followers of the ecosystem, the name "Gram" is far from new. Before regulatory challenges forced changes to the original project structure, Gram was initially introduced as the native cryptocurrency envisioned for Telegram's blockchain initiative. The proposal notes that the term Gram appeared throughout the project's original technical documentation and remains embedded within portions of the network's core codebase today. As a result, many community members view the rebranding not as the creation of a new identity but rather as a return to the network's roots. Supporters argue that the Gram brand carries historical significance and stronger recognition among early participants who followed the ecosystem from its inception.
Network Performance Has Improved Significantly
The proposal also highlighted several technological improvements that have strengthened the network in recent months. According to the accompanying statement, recent upgrades have dramatically improved blockchain performance, including: Transaction speeds reportedly increasing by approximately ten times. Confirmation times falling to less than one second. Network fees declining by roughly six times. Transaction costs approaching near-zero levels. These enhancements are designed to improve scalability and user experience as The Open Network continues competing with major blockchain ecosystems. Faster transactions and lower fees remain critical factors for attracting developers, decentralized applications, and mainstream users.
What This Means for Investors and Users
For holders of the asset, the transition should be straightforward. Users do not need to: Transfer funds. Swap tokens. Update wallets. Convert balances. Move assets between chains. Exchanges, wallets, and infrastructure providers will likely update their interfaces over time to reflect the new GRAM ticker. The actual value of holdings will not change because of the rebranding itself. Investors will continue owning the same underlying asset, simply under a different name and ticker symbol. Market participants should expect a transitional period during which some platforms may continue displaying TON while others adopt the new GRAM branding.
Branding Could Strengthen Ecosystem Recognition
Beyond the technical aspects, the decision highlights the growing importance of branding in the cryptocurrency industry. As blockchain ecosystems compete for users, developers, and institutional attention, recognizable and historically meaningful brands can become valuable strategic assets. Supporters of the proposal believe that returning to the Gram identity could: Improve brand consistency. Strengthen ties to Telegram's original blockchain vision. Increase historical recognition. Simplify ecosystem messaging. Differentiate the token from the broader TON network. Whether the rebranding ultimately delivers these benefits remains to be seen, but the overwhelming support from voters suggests the community believes the change is worthwhile.
Conclusion
The TON community has approved a landmark proposal to rename Toncoin (TON) as Gram (GRAM), with more than 81% of voting participants supporting the initiative. While the token's name and ticker symbol will change, the underlying blockchain infrastructure remains unaffected. The Open Network will continue operating under the TON name, while users will see their TON balances automatically reflected as GRAM. No migrations, swaps, or technical actions will be required from holders. The move represents a symbolic return to the project's original roots while reinforcing Telegram's growing influence within the ecosystem. As The Open Network continues expanding its user base and improving performance, the reintroduction of the Gram brand may become one of the most significant identity shifts in the blockchain's history.
