Crypto Markets Flat on December 19: Bitcoin Hovers Near $88K as Traders Digest Cooler Inflation and ETF Outflows
Cryptocurrency markets remained in a holding pattern on Friday, December 19, 2025, with Bitcoin and most major tokens showing minimal movement. Traders continued to process cooler-than-expected November inflation data while ETF flows turned negative again and long-term Bitcoin holders quietly distributed supply.
Total crypto market capitalization stood steady around $3.06 trillion, virtually unchanged over the past 24 hours. Bitcoin (BTC) traded near $88,000, down a modest 0.4% on the day and still unable to reclaim the psychologically important $90,000 level after several failed attempts. Ethereum (ETH) sat just below $3,000, down roughly 0.5% today and already off more than 8% this week. Among the top ten, XRP posted the largest daily loss at –1.3%, while the rest traded flat or slightly lower.
Long-Term Holders Distribute – Shark Wallets Mostly Reshuffle
Glassnode analysts highlighted two important on-chain trends. Long-term Bitcoin holders have ramped up selling, steadily releasing supply into the market. At the same time, the recent apparent increase in Bitcoin held by “shark” wallets (large addresses) is largely internal reshuffling by custodial entities rather than genuine new buying. More than 90% of the reported accumulation appears to be wallet reorganization, not fresh demand.
This distribution phase, combined with the Crypto Fear & Greed Index remaining deep in “extreme fear,” explains why many traders are staying on the sidelines waiting for clearer downside resolution or a decisive reversal signal.
Liquidations and Big Movers
Over the past 24 hours crypto liquidations totaled approximately $496 million. Long positions bore the brunt ($356 million), while shorts accounted for $140 million. Bitcoin liquidations reached $169 million, followed by Ethereum at $122 million.
In the top 100 assets by market cap: Gainers: LEO Token (+10% to $7.28) and Zcash (+9.5%) led the pack, reversing recent weakness. Losers: MemeCore (–13%) and Mantle (–6%) saw the heaviest declines.
ETF Flows Turn Negative Again
Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net outflows of $161 million on Thursday, Dec. 18, after a brief inflow the day before. Total net assets fell to roughly $111 billion. Spot Ethereum ETFs saw even heavier redemptions ($96.6 million), leaving total net assets near $17.1 billion. The return to outflows reinforces the cautious institutional stance that has dominated December.
Macro Backdrop: Yields Rise, Stocks Gain on TikTok News
U.S. Treasury yields climbed on Friday as markets digested the cooler inflation print and awaited further economic data. The 10-year yield rose to about 4.15% and the 2-year to 3.49%, reflecting ongoing uncertainty about the Federal Reserve’s next steps. In contrast, U.S. equities moved higher, with gains in the Nasdaq and other indices partly driven by Oracle’s rally after TikTok agreed to sell its U.S. operations to a joint venture involving Oracle and Silver Lake.
Crypto, however, has not yet followed stocks higher, underscoring the current disconnect between traditional risk assets and digital assets.
What to Watch Next
Bitcoin needs a clean move above $90,000 with volume to shift short-term sentiment. A failure to hold $85,000–$86,000 would likely open the door to deeper testing of $82,000. Ethereum must defend $2,900 to avoid renewed pressure toward $2,700. XRP needs to stabilize above $1.80 to limit downside risk.
Until long-term holder distribution slows, ETF flows turn sustainably positive, or fear turns to greed, the market is likely to remain range-bound with downside bias. The cooler inflation data is positive in the long run, but traders want proof that lower rates will flow into risk assets before stepping back in aggressively.
For now: patience, tight risk management, and small position sizes. The structure is still intact. The next big directional move will come when fear finally exhausts itself.
